Lexar's PowerToGo
Beginning in July, Lexar will include its new PowerToGo software in all of its Platinum series drives. Owners of other drives will be able to purchase the program for $30.
Except for certain specially designed programs, its not possible to run Windows XP programs from a flash drive. The installation process for Windows applications drops files into the operating systems’s Windows folders and makes changes to the system’s registry. PowerToGo lets flash drive users install standard windows applications on their drives by tricking installation processes into making those changes on the flash drive. It also will store preferences and settings for programs that absolutely will not run on a flash drive, such as Office.
When you plug a PowerToGo enabled drive into a Windows XP computer, the software hitches a ride on the host system, allowing you to operate your own software. When you unplug it, all traces of your visit leave with the flash drive.
While the U3 system also performs similar feats of magic, the difference is that U3 requires special flash drives, and PowerToGo apparently will not.
